Dear Bishop Neumann Parents and Friends:
Congratulations to Monica Chohon, who is the recipient of the 2020-2021 St. Damien of Molokai Scholarship, which currently distributes $350 per year and is awarded to the student who best exemplifies Jesus’ words, “Whatsoever you do to the least of my brother, you do unto me” (Mt.25:40).
This scholarship is granted to a current 9th, 10th, or 11th grade student that has completed his/her service hours at Bishop Neumann and has gone above and beyond in the service of others. Monica served the poor of Chicago last summer on the Bishop Neumann Chicago Mission Trip. She worked tirelessly in soup kitchens, homeless shelters, nursing homes, and with inner city youth. Monica also gave of her time at our local Villa Marie Day where she did activities with the alumni of Villa Marie and worked on service projects for the Marian Sisters.
Even more importantly, Monica is a witness every day at Bishop Neumann of what it means to be Christ to others in all she does. Monica is a great example of humility and kindness and demonstrates to all those she comes in contact with what true discipleship looks like. Monica’s quiet, unassuming demeanor teaches us all that we don’t have to be the center of attention to live extraordinary lives. Sometimes it is just the opposite. St. Therese teaches us to do small things with great love. Monica Chohon is a witness to this every day at Bishop Neumann.
